Six Ways of Improving Employee Punctuality

1. Lead by Example

2. Solve it on the First Day of Work

The moment you initiate a new worker into your business, make sure that he or she understands that the company takes a very serious view on punctuality. As oral agreements are not as binding, get the policy printed out in black and white and get your new employee to sign it as a show of commitment.

3. Find Out Why

No human is born perfect and the truth of the matter is that your employee is bound to arrive at least one day late to work. Before you start thinking about pay cuts and deductions of annual bonuses, have a talk with the employee and find out what the problem is. If there was a death in the family or if your employee really was bedridden with sickness, have them bring in solid evidence such as an obituary or a medical note from the doctor.

4. To Punish or Reward

The rule of thumb is that an employee that makes severe mistakes at work should be given two warnings before their job is put on the line. After all, why keep a worker that is not helping you make any money? Bosses and managers can also consider slashing their salary, bonuses and employee benefits as well whereas other business owners take a more positive approach by rewarding employees who are consistently early with cash, prizes or a holiday trip.

5. Play Fair

So you might really like some of your employees more than you like others on your team. Part of being a member of the upper management level means that you need to be wise enough to separate work from personal matters, and that means not showing any favoritism to anyone in particular. If your favorite person at work arrives late without a valid excuse, make sure that he or she understands that they will also receive the same punishment as the other workers.
